Anti-Inertia --Islam, Science, The 2012 Predictions & The Beginning of The End

I hate to put this in a blog, but I need to get it off my chest.

As we get closer to 2012, more and more media coverage of the "2012 doomsday prediction(s)" will surface.  There are literally 100's of sites out there to cover this topic.  I simply wanted to give my personal opinion on this, from a semi-educated-guess and perspective.  "Semi-educated-guess and perspective" you ask?  Rest assured I'm not a scholar, and I am no more than a self-proclaimed thinker.  That's it.  I mean nothing more than just that.

A few things to note:  My opinions are biased and driven by my own faith.  What I read, however, has driven me to find out about this 2012 stuff only last night.  I swear I knew nothing of it before then, as naive as that may sound.

The conversation with my wife started with a news article I came across at Slashdot via an RSS feed titled "What We Can Do About Massive Solar Flares."

You see, as a Muslim I believe that there are minor (or small) signs leading to the Day of Judgment, as there are major (or big) signs.  Naturally, the small ones must occur first.  There are no middle signs per se.  There's a transitional period, if I may personally call it that, which was the point of my curiosity and study for a few months some time ago.  The middle-period, if you will, prophesized by the Prophet & Messenger of Islam Muhammad (pbuh) talks about the coming of Al-Mahdi (literally translated as The Guided One).

Al-Mahdi is a human, and nothing more, that (in a nutshell) knows the difference between right and wrong, and is guided by God without revelation (in other words, he's not a Prophet or a Messenger) to simply do the right thing.  To summarize the consequence of his appearance/coming, he will start ridding humanity from corruption.  He starts with the Arabian Peninsula, which naturally leads to a lot of contention, battles and attempts on his life.  All of this will promote him and confirm his identify even more resulting in a flood of Muslims from all parts of the globe rushing to join him.  Some, who I consider lacking in knowledge or at minimum in the true understanding of Arabic, think that Al-Mahdi and even Al-Dajjal (the anti-Christ) as symbols of things or metaphores.  And while I'm no scholar, as I've previously mentioned, I would have to seriously disagree.  They are quite literal.

As I was saying, Al-Mahdi is quickly joined by thousands (if not millions) shortly after he reaches the Arabian Peninsula.  That's where he starts, cleansing it from its corruption.  Allow me to interject here and express how this is so needed right now.  He's then sent a confrontational army from the north of the Arabian peninsula  —Current-day Syria, Iraq and may be even a bit of Iran; all but one person (or two) from that army sinks in the ground (earthquake, quick sand?) before they even get to him.

He continues on with other "battles" but those or even his very own comingis not what caught my attention. Some of the facts core to this belief, however, did.  There's no mention of modern warfare equipment like tanks, airplanes, rockets, missiles or even as simple as guns.  It's all done with swords.  As there's also mention of horses' neigh.  And there's even mention of a major battle (bigger than any other before it ... ever!) that would last all day and break at night.  Of course, in this day and age, nighttime is not a barrier as if it would be without electricity, technology, etc.  Those who took the symbolic route might feel a point has been made for their case.  Heck, skeptics or even some Atheists will likely say "that's organized religion for you."  For me, however, this means something will happen.  I believe in this prophecy without a shred of doubt.  But that also means that something will have to happen to allow for such a leveled playing field.

This is where I started to ask "what would leave us without the ability to have even guns, stop fighting at nighttime and ride horses?"  I've heard mention of fog where one couldn't see his/her car less than 5 feet away.  Although that's hard to fathom, it is possible!  What I couldn't understand is how such a climatic event would debilitate a massive region and for an extended period of time.  A long enough period of time to be measured in months, if not years.  Naturally, I started to look at something bigger, perhaps even on a global scale.  That's where my interest in solar flares and some of the events that took place relatively recently appealed to me.

How Bad Can Solar Flares Get?

In 1969, astrophysicist Thomas Gold published lunar rock evidence indicating that, within the last 30,000 years, the radiation intensity on the Moon had reached 100 suns for 10 to 100 seconds, possibly due to a solar nova.

In 1975, astronomer A. Lovell suggested that sun-like stars occasionally produce flares of up to 30,000 times more energetic than the largest solar flare of modern times.

In 1977, astrophysicists Wdowczyk and Wolfendale suggested that the Sun might produce a flare a million times larger about once every 100,000 years.

Moreover in 1978, NASA astronomers Zook, Hartung, and Storzer had published lunar rock evidence indicating that 16,000 years ago solar flare background radiation intensity on the Moon's surface had peaked to 50 times the current intensity and that this may have been somehow associated with the retreat of the ice sheets.

November 4th 2003 saw the most powerful solar flare eruption on record (see graphic on the left). This solar explosion broke all records and is an event without precedence in living memory. When the next solar cycle wil go to its maximum, there is little doubt that larger flares will occur. Flares last from a few seconds to at most a couple of hours so only one one side of the Earth would be devastated.

Concordance (1999): Astronomers announced that they had observed large explosive outbursts from the surfaces of nearby normal sunlike stars. These "superflares" were observed to range from 100 to 10 million times the energy of the largest flare observed on the Sun in modern times!

April 2, 2001, solar flare number 9393 broke all records for brightness and strength, weighing in at the unheard-of X-class of 22; the measurement scale had previously only been designed to go to a frightful maximum of 20. This flare was considered the largest of its kind ever observed for at least 25 years, earning it the new name of “mega-flare.” It was nearly three times more powerful than the March 1989 event, which totally shut down Canada’s power grid. Fortunately, the X-22 level of radiation from flare number 9393 did not directly impact the earth.

On April 10, 2001, two CMEs were released.
Then, on April 11th, a rash of severe tornadoes, some a quarter of a mile wide, ripped through the Midwestern United States, affecting Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska. Furthermore, a 5.9 earthquake on April 13 that destroyed 30,000 homes in China, and a 6.5 on April 15 off the coast of Japan. Most scientists would not be willing to acknowledge the connection between the solar activity and events such as severe weather and earthquakes, but again we see how the energy phenomena are related. All these events clustered around the surge in solar activity of April 10th.
Without going into details of the small signs of the Day of Judgment from an Islamic perspective, indulge me a bit in calling Al-Mahdi's appearance the middle sign in and of itself.  Later on, towards the end of this middle-period, Jesus (pbuh) appears in current-day Syria, close to Damascus (but not in it).  What?  Muslims believe in Jesus?  Yes, we Muslims believe in Jesus, his miraculous birth, his mother the virgin Mary (pbuh) and in his return as well.

After Jesus (pbuh) rids the World of Al-Dajjal, we Muslims believe that he lives on Earth approx. 40 years, marries, has children and dies a normal death.  Much after that, albeit an unknown amount of time, The Day of Judgment will happen.  Of course, I'm really simplifying this.  Now, the Day of Judgment could happen centuries after the natural death of Jesus (pbuh); but no one really knows.  What we do know, in Islam, is that Jesus' appearance is considered a major sign.  In other words, it is clear that his appearance is not part of the small signs, and that it is explicitly mentioned as a major one.  However, a much greater sign than his appearance, and even eclipses Gog & Magog, is when The Doors of Mercy will close and no longer will the repentance of humans be accepted by God.  In Islam, this happens when the sun rises from the West.  No, it's not a typo.  A major sign, and not all that far from the Day of Judgment itself, is when the sun rises from the West.

"How on Earth will the sun rise from the West," I repeatedly asked myself
Everybody knows that the dynamo of a bicycle creates a magnetic field, and therefore electricity. As long as you keep cycling, the inner magnets keep turning around and electric power is generated. The earth has a somewhat similar, though more complicated, principle. Just like the bicycle dynamo, the magnetic field is generated in the earth’s core, because the liquid upper layer rotates with a different speed in relation to the earth’s core. There, the mechanical energy is transformed into magnetic energy, resulting in a North Pole and a South Pole.

Should you want to change the poles of a dynamo, you would have to change its direction of rotation! Expanding this principle, the earth also has to change its direction when the North Pole becomes the South Pole! So here we find a scientific proof for polar reversals. It correlates completely with the statement of the Old Egyptians on this subject: after every pole reversal the sun rose from the opposite direction.

The proof of previous events is found in the earth layers, the rocky crust of our planet. The lithosphere consists of igneous rocks like granite and basalt, topped by sedimentary rocks. The latter are formed on the igneous rocks, which form the original earth crust. One can regularly find places where the igneous rocks cover sedimentary rocks over large areas. Cuvier (1769-1832), the founder of the science of rib-skeletons was deeply impressed by the image they showed of successive earth layers.

He was convinced that the bottom of the sea had repeatedly changed into mainland and vice versa. From his studies he concluded that huge disasters had destroyed life in extensive areas.

In "Essay on the Theory of Earth" he writes:

"When the traveller moves through these fertile plains he will not have the slightest notion that nature has also had its inner wars, and that revolutions and catastrophes have tormented the terrestrial surface. But he will change his opinion when he starts digging in the ground that now looks so peaceful."

What he saw were the destructions caused by countless polar reversals. Doesn’t a sudden deceleration and acceleration of the earth mean a complete destruction of civilizations? The end of billions of animal lives?
The Orphic Hymns remind this only too well:

"When the arch of heaven, the mighty Olympus, tremendously trembled… and the earth was screaming terribly, the sea fumingly rose, tempestuous of purple waves."

For the survivors of the forthcoming catastrophe, the result of the next pole reversal will be more than overwhelming, as if a gigantic cosmic catastrophe could make the universe rotate in the opposite direction. The inhabitants of the earth will experience this in the same way, because all the stars and planets will now rise on a different horizon. Our sun too, the closest star, will experience this almost unbelievable situation: it will now rise in the west and set in the east, and oceans will also rise. Those are the results of a magnetic field out of control.

The Choctaws from Oklahoma tell the following about this:

"In the north appeared mountain-high waves, quickly coming closer."

The Indians of Oregon tell the following story about Mount Jefferson, three kilometers high:

"A huge flood inundated the land. Then the water drew back. A second time a flood inundated the land and drew back. Afraid of a next and even bigger flood, they cut the biggest cedar tree they could find and made the biggest canoe they had ever seen. When the flood came for the third time, they chose the strongest and cleverest man and woman and placed them in the canoe, together with enough food for many days. Then a bigger and deeper flood engulfed all the land and all the people."

A long time ago our ancestors gained scientific insight into the catastrophes that took place with a reversing magnetic field. To top that, they knew how to calculate this beforehand… We would now be building survival arks if wars hadn’t caused the loss of this knowledge. But it turned out to be different. All knowledge about the cataclysm that awaits us has been dissolved in the mist of times.

And when the earth reverses its direction of movement, the seas will again gather into immeasurable tides… and planetary lightning will electrocute huge parts of the earth. Without notice the astonished spectators will start fighting a battle they will lose against this planetary violence of nature adrift, and almost all will perish in a horrible way.
As you can see, solar flares really fit well in explaining the most logical event to happen to allow for such events.
Let me summarize:
  • Small signs - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • Al-Mahdi (I'm personally calling his appearance THE middle sign) - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • The "battles" of Al-Mahdi (although they're more like a cleansing) - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • Leading to a major battle, one where Muslims will suffer the loss of two-thirds of its army, and win by only the remaining third - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • The manner in which those battles take place (with swords and without the mention or hint of technology) - Not explained.
  • The return of Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon them both) - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • Jesus (pbuh) living, marrying, having kids and dying a normal death - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • Other events taking place (Gog & Magog, etc.) - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • The sun rises from the west, signaling the end of all repentance and returning to God - Prophecized by Muhammad (pbuh).
  • How the sun rises from the west is not explained.
The prophecies are faith-based and I realize that.  But I believe in them.  The purpose of this blog post/entry is to understand the unexplained part in the simple list above.  Science, in my opinion, never conflicted with Islam, or with any religion.  It has always complimented it.  To understand how science, findings, history, etc. can help explain these things is what brought me to this point.

Take a step back and you'll quickly realize that the only possibility and explanation is for solar flares to take place ... in both unexplained situations.

The whole 2012 stuff, at its core, talks about how several different civilizations calculated (one could argue that they predicted) that the solar calculations of the next major solar flare would happen in 2012.  It does not mean that the end of the World would necessarily happen; but it does seem to indicate something major.  The Mayan calendar in particular seems to not have been wrong on anything it calculated thus far.

Armed with this knowledge and my own beliefs, I can't help but think that solar flares are very likely to happen as calculated/predicted and it would simply kill technology as we know it.  And quite possibly & literally debilitating all things electrical.  The chaos, lack of services, etc. all aside, it simply means that this is the precursor for the prophecies listed above —The coming of the Mahdi, the ridding of corruption, the descent of Jesus (pbuh), etc.

As many have said, should this happen, third-World countries will be better off than advanced ones.  Look at it all together.  Why would anyone not want to be in the Middle East.  If you're a Muslim, you definitely want to take part of Al-Mahdi's "cleansing" (as I called it), and Jesus' (pbuh) descent.  If you're a Christian, you at least want to be near Europe where you can be close and near the time and place of where/when Jesus (pbuh) would appear.  And if you don't really care either way, then wouldn't you be better off near a mix of new World and old World knowledge?  Heck, just the tsunami possibility from the Canary Islands alone is a good reason to migrate back to the Old World.
